Warriors 3 battle hard against the Renegades

On Saturday 7th December 2024 our development team welcomed the Blackburn Renegades to Leeds for a challenge game.

This was our development team’s first outing of the 2024-25 season.

In team news, quite a few Warriors players were unavailable for the game - Brendan Hullah, Lisa Speed, Richard Knight, Michael Laidler, Simon Bainbridge, Lee Worsnup, Ivans Lebedjoks, Phil Bradley, Sam Walker, Kieran High, Matty Meadows, Zach Huntley and Tomasz Molenda.

But despite that, the team had enough available players to ice three lines.

Dressed players:

Rory Butcher (NM), Kieran High (NM) Dean Cadman, Dimitri Shalashilin, Connor Brocklebank, Craig Baker, Freddy Monk, Gary Clough, Andis Jansons, Ash Davies, Heather McCarten, Jared Weldon, Jonjo Marshall, Josh Moss, Matt Dudley, Paul Eaglestone, Sam Stokes, Simon Davis and Stella Giwisser.

1st period

The opening period looked like it could be a stalemate as both teams fought hard to break the deadlock without success. It took until the 14th minute before the first goal was scored.

Unfortunately, it went the way of the Renegades. The visitors then followed up with a 2nd goal two minutes later to make it 0-2.

Not ideal for the Warriors, but they were still in the game.

2nd period

The Warriors needed to score the next goal to stay in touch and it only took them 6 minutes to reduce the deficit. Matt Dudley scored the Warriors opening goal, with assists from Simon Davis and Connor Brocklebank.

(The Warriors changed goalies at 30 minutes as Kieran High came in for Rory Butcher).

The Renegades roared back with two goals in five minutes (30th and 35th minutes) to extend their lead to 1-4.

Undeterred, the Warriors kept fighting and got their reward in the 37th minute when debutant Sam Stokes scored his first Warriors goal, with the assist from Gary Clough.

Unfortunately, the Warriors couldn’t close out the period at 2-4 as the Renegades scored their 5th in the final minute of the period.

3rd period

With the final period underway, the visitors started the quickest out of the two teams. The Renegades scored their 6th within two minutes of the restart to make it 2-6.

The Warriors needed to respond quickly and six minutes later (48th minute) they did - Dudley scored his 2nd of the game with an assist from Freddy Monk.

The elation was short-lived as the Renegades restored their four goal lead after only 20 seconds of the restart. It was now 3-7 to the Renegades going into the final 10 minutes of the game.

It didn’t take long for the Warriors to go up the other end and score their 4th and final goal of the game as Jonjo Marshall scored in the 51st minute, with an assist from Andis Jansons.

With only 20 seconds to go, the Renegades added to their tally to finish the game at 4-8 to the visitors.
