The battle of the Warriors

On Saturday 14th December 2024 our development team travelled to Peterborough to take on their namesakes.

This was our development team’s second game in as many weeks, after their home game against Blackburn Renegades on the 7th. But this was their first trip down to Peterborough.

In team news, quite a few Warriors players were unavailable for the game - Rory Butcher, Matt Dudley, Lisa Speed, Dimitri Shalashilin, Richard Knight, Lee Worsnup, Ivans Lebedjoks, Dean Cadman, Josh Moss, Phil Bradley, Sam Walker, Matty Meadows, Sam Stokes, Paul Eaglestone, Stella Giwisser and Tomasz Molenda.

But despite that, the team almost had enough available players to ice three lines.

Dressed players:

Kieran High (NM), Zach Huntley, Brendan Hullah, Connor Brocklebank, Craig Baker, Freddy Monk, Dan Read, Gary Clough, Andis Jansons, Ash Davies, Heather McCarten, Jared Weldon, Jonjo Marshall, Phil Pearce and Simon Davis.

1st period

The opening period didn’t start well for Leeds as they took a couple of minor penalties.

With just over a minute on the clock they were on a 5 on 3 penalty kill. But thankfully they defended well and managed to kill the hosts powerplay to keep it 0-0.

The period was a fairly even contest but the Peterborough team were more clinical in front of net, bagging two goals in the 7th and 16th minutes.

The period ended with Leeds two goals down. Not ideal, but they were still in the game.

Peterborough 2 Warriors 0

2nd period

The Warriors needed to score the next goal to stay in touch. The team battled well in the opening exchanges but unfortunately the hosts picked up their 3rd goal of the game on 25 minutes.

Undeterred, the Warriors kept fighting and were able to frustrate Peterborough who were unable to add to their tally. The remainder of the period was a stalemate with no further goals from either side.

Peterborough 3 Warriors 0

3rd period

With the final period underway, the hosts started the quickest out of the two teams. Peterborough scored their 4th within two minutes of the restart to make it 4-0.

With such a mountain to climb, it wouldn’t have been surprising for Leeds to become demoralised and collapse, but they didn’t.

They continued to battle hard, keeping the hosts at bay whilst also looking to open their account at the other end.

It took them until the final 5 minutes of the game but Leeds finally got their goal on 56 minutes when Andis Jansons scored from a Jared Weldon assist.

Final score :

Peterborough 4 Warriors 1

Points scorers:

Andis Jansons 1+0
Jared Weldon 0+1

Great effort from our development team who came away with a respectable score-line. The team was missing a lot of players including their main goal scorer, Matt Dudley.

Jared Weldon

Player of the game

Phil Pearce

Captain’s player of the game

Player of the Game, as selected by Peterborough, went to Jared Weldon - and the Captain’s Helmet went to Phil Pearce - who was making his Leeds Warriors debut! Well played guys.
