Warriors 2 gunned down by Mavericks
In their home uniform of all black, the Warriors were coming up against the Mavericks for the first time.
The team were without a back-up netminder, meaning Ben Cohen would be between the pipes for the full 60 minutes.
1st period
The game didn’t start as the Warriors hoped, with the Mavericks racing to a 0-4 lead inside the first 7 minutes. Thankfully, the Warriors were able to strike back in the following minute through an unassisted goal from Den Bautriss.
But the team were unable to stop the bleeding, as the Mavericks hit them with three more goals before the first period was done.
At the end of the first period, the score was:
Warriors 1 Mavericks 7
2nd period
With the Warriors becoming more frustrated at the score-line, they pushed harder and opened the scoring for the period on 22 minutes.
A determined Nathan Clegg picked up the puck and skated coast to coast to bring the game to 2-7 Mavericks. Assists given to Ryan Marsh and number #95.
Unfortunately, the Warriors determination would occasionally spill over and result in minor penalties being taken. The team picked up 12 minutes in minor penalties during the period, which severely hampered their chances of getting back into the game.
The Mavericks were able to take advantage of the power-plays - scoring 7 consecutive goals without reply. The period ended just as the first did - 1-7 to Mavericks.
At the end of the second period, the score was:
Warriors 2 Mavericks 14
3rd period
Despite only playing for pride, the Warriors remained determined and wanted to reduce the deficit as much as they could in the final period.
The period started well as Simon Morrow got on the board within 38 seconds of the restart - assisted by Niku Ghaemi.
The Mavericks hit back twice to make it 3-16, but these were the last goals that the away team would score.
The same duo of Morrow/Ghaemi combined to make it 4-16 with 43 minutes on the clock.
Four minutes later, Oliver Stick pulled another one back for Warriors with an unassisted goal - and this was followed up 30 seconds later with Morrow’s hat-trick goal - assisted by Tom Gabbitas and Oliver Stick.
The score was now 6-16 and the period score was 4-2 to Warriors.
Unfortunately, discipline problems blighted the end of the final period as the team picked up 21 minutes in penalties in the final ten minutes of the game. This included a 5 minute penalty and a 10 minute gross misconduct penalty.
But despite that, the Warriors kept the Mavericks at bay and managed to score one final goal on 56 minutes - Howard Barwick grabbed the team’s 7th of the night - assisted by Oliver Stick and Luke Cadman.

A tough night for the Warriors 2 guys, who picked up a lot of penalties during the game. There are positives to take from the game as the final period showed. Having lost the first two periods 1-7, to win the final period 5-2 is very impressive.
