Warriors 3 record first win!

On Sunday 19th June, Leeds Warriors 3 took on Leeds Gryphons’ D team at Planet Ice Leeds, in what was the Warriors’ development team’s second game against another club.

In a sign of the popularity of our development program, the Warriors iced 22 players for this game.

Things didn’t start great however, as the Gryphons scored twice within the first 2:09. This turned out to be the last of the scoring in the period, as the Warriors worked to find their feet after a rocky first few minutes.

The second session started much more positively for Leeds as Chris Scampton got the Warriors on the board to make it 2-1, assisted by Tom Burrell. The Gryphons replied to make it 3-1, but Leeds pegged them back with a goal from Paul Baker, assisted by Tom Burrell and Chris Scampton.

After the Gryphons again extended their lead to 4-2, the Warriors turned it on and levelled the score at 4-4 before the second break, with goals from David Gorog (unassisted) and Dennis Bautris (from Josh Downe).

All tied up going into the third period, Leeds had a great chance to record the first ever win for the Warriors’ development team. And they played like it, blasting their way to a 7-4 lead with goals from Chris Scampton (assist David Gorog), Josh Downe (from Ivans Lebedjoks), and Tom Burrell (assist David Gorog).

However, the Gryphons weren’t giving up without a fight, and they responded with two quick goals of their own to get back to within single goal at 7-6. But the Warriors had other ideas and two goals from Dennis Bautris (unassisted) and Matt Dudley (from Paul Baker) meant that a last minute strike from the Gryphons was no more than a consolation, with the Warriors skating off victorious with a final score of 9-7.

The goalies from the Warriors also deserve a mention, with Jack Cook backstopping for the first two periods, and Stephen Elliott coming in to finish things off in the third.

Congrats to Dennis Bautris, who was awarded the Warriors’ Player of the Game by the Gryphons, and to Chris Scampton, who got the nod for the Helmet from team captain Rich Guttridge.

And a deserved shoutout to coach Tom Mallon for masterminding the victory, with support on the bench from fellow Warriors 1 player Niks Kamaldins.

Well done all!
