Warriors 2 see off the Nomads

On Sunday 30th March our Warriors 2 team took on the newly formed Pollington Nomads in a challenge game at Planet Ice, Leeds.

The Nomads, playing their first ever game, are formed of players from various teams, including a number of Warriors. Icing for the Nomads were Luke Newbiggin, Dave Reid, Jared Weldon, Ryan Marsh, and Craig Baker.

Stewart Nelson is also involved with both clubs, but chose to play for Warriors 2 in this game.

Dressed players

Ben Briggs (NM), Joe Quinn (NM), Louis Feather, Andrew Everson, Lewis Astill, Corey Clough-Howard, Adam Tomlinson, Liam Symington, Howard Barwick, Jamie Thurston, Matt Bolan, David Gorog, Rich Guttridge, Stewart Nelson, Tim Lyndon-Belt, James Way and Luke Cadman.

1st period

The Nomads were something of an unknown quantity, with this being their first ever contest, so the Warriors had to be ready from the first face-off.

They got the start they were looking for when Lewis Astill opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 1:06 into the game.

The next ten minutes were evenly matched, with both teams creating chances. Warriors’ starting netminder Ben Briggs made a string of solid saves to keep the Nomads out.

At the mid-way point in the period, Warriors’ Stu Nelson found himself on a breakaway and finished calmly, set up by Lewis Astill.

With the period winding down, the Warriors extended their lead further. Howard Barwick made a nice move around the Nomads’ goalie to score, with Adam Tomlinson picking up the assist.

2nd period

The Warriors started the second period strongly, extending their lead to 4–0 through Jamie Thurston, who tucked one away with an assist from James Way at 22:43.

However, the Nomads responded with two quick goals to bring the score back to 4–2, shifting the momentum of the game.

Joe Quinn, who replaced Ben Briggs in the Warriors’ net after 30 minutes, picked up where Briggs left off, making key saves to prevent the Nomads from closing the gap further.

But Leeds answered back with two of their own to take back control — Thurston grabbing his second of the night, assisted by Tim Lyndon-Belt and Matt Bolan, followed by a well-worked goal from Andrew Everson, set up by Stu Nelson and Lewis Astill. The period ended with the Warriors firmly in the ascendancy, leading 6–2.

3rd period

The Warriors kept the pressure on in the third, with Adam Tomlinson extending their lead to 7–2 with a well-deserved, unassisted effort.

The Nomads pulled one back to make it 7–3, but it was Leeds who had the final say — Andrew Everson bagged his second of the night, assisted once again by Lewis Astill.

The game ended 8–3 in the Warriors’ favour, rounding off a confident and composed performance.
