Warriors 2 claim victory in Hull

On Saturday, 16th December, Warriors 2 took on the Kingston Fat Dads at Hull Arena in their first game of this season’s M62 Cup.

Having lost to the Fat Dad’s last season, the Warriors were out for revenge and a better performance this time around. Starting in goal for the Warriors and making his debut for the club, was netminder Joe Quinn.

1st period

The first period started with both teams getting some early opportunities. The Warriors, who had greater depth and the ability to roll four forward lines, were having the better of the play when the Fat Dads opened the scoring at 11:34.

Despite this setback, the Warriors kept playing and were rewarded with an equaliser from Lewis Astill, assisted by Tom Cokill, at 18.34.

Just as it looked like the teams would go into the first break level, with less than a minute to go in the period the Fat Dads were awarded a goal, despite the puck hitting the post and never entering the Warriors’ net.

A tough break for Leeds, and the period ended 2-1 to Kingston.

2nd period

The early part of the second period was an even affair with both teams exchanging chances. The Warriors struck first thanks to a great solo rush and finish by Chris Scampton, unassisted, at 28.11.

And it was Scampton who put Leeds in front for the first time in the game, pouncing on a loose rebound to make it 3-2 Warriors at 38:34. Howard Barwick picked up the assist.

Leeds then extended the lead even further, with Tim Lyndon-Belt finishing a nice feed from Gabbitas to make it 4-2.

However, once again the Fat Dads ended the period with a late goal, pulling back to within one at 4-3 and setting up a tight final frame.

3rd period

Within a minute of the restart, the Warriors had made it 5-3. Gabbitas finished from close range after another nice set up by Cokill.

The Fat Dads now started to really push for goals and had a number of grade A chances, including a couple of breakaways, but Ben Cohen stood tall in net for Leeds, who held on to take the victory.

A great win for Warriors 2 against a tough opponent, and a result that hopefully bodes well for the upcoming season.
