Fat Dads do the double over Warriors 2

On Saturday 22nd July, our Warriors 2 team welcomed Kingston Fat Dads to Planet Ice, Leeds, in the return leg of the M62 Cup.

When the team played the Fat Dads in May, they lost 4-1 so they were hoping to exact some revenge from that defeat.

In team news, the Warriors were without several players: Niku Ghaemi, Tom Cokill, Sean Clough, Jamie Thurston, Dale Sunderland, Den Bautris, Tyler Heming, Mo Lin, Josh Edwards, Matt Bolan, Liam Symington and Luke Cadman.

This left the team with 14 skaters. But thankfully, Warriors 1 defender Ellen Gallimore was available to play, meaning the team could ice three lines.

1st period

The first period was a hard fought battle with both teams finding it difficult to make the breakthrough. The Warriors were holding out Fat Dads and it looked like the game would remain goalless going into the first interval. But unfortunately, with only 19 seconds remaining on the clock, the Fat Dads broke the deadlock.

2nd period

Conceding that goal so late in the first period was a blow to the Warriors, but they were still in the game. The next goal was crucial. They needed to make sure they avoided conceding an early goal in the second period and push for equaliser.

But, the Fat Dads had other ideas. Soon after the restart they doubled their lead to 0-2. Another blow for the Warriors.

After another five minutes, the away team scored their third goal of the night and the game was in danger of becoming out of reach. The team needed to dig in and stop the bleeding.

Thankfully, the Warriors didn’t concede any further goals in the period as the remaining 14 minutes were a stalemate.

3rd period

Going into the final period, it was an uphill task for the Warriors, but if they could get an early goal, it could change the game.

Only 3 minutes into the period, the Fat Dads extended their lead to 0-4 and the game was now looking out of reach for the Warriors. But, they never gave up. No more goals were conceded and they registered a goal on 53 minutes as Chris Scampton scored from a Simon Morrow assist.

With the Warriors now on the board, the score-line looked more respectable at 1-4. This was more reflective of how the game had been, as both teams were quite equal.
